Trouble competing with a 1911 Long rifle |
Lead | |
|
With the issue sights (rear set on the bottom setting: 300 yards) and using GP11 ammo, my recently acquired 1911 Long Rifle prints at 12 O'Clock in the 7
ring at 200 yards. I know that a taller front sight will cure this, but I read CMP rule 3.6.3 as not allowing changes to front sights other than substituting
flat top front sights for inverted V front sights. See CMP rules 3.6.1 and 3.6.3:

NuJudge wrote: Chris, It's 6.3.6 that covers Foreign rifles. I think you are reading too much into it. If you can replace a barleycorn sight with a plain blade up to 0.1" wide, do you really think it would be illegal to vary the height of the blade? I don't think it's an issue. Since you are allowed to use handloads, you can regulate your elevation zero with your powder charge. That's useful if you compete at both 100 and 200 yards, since the "adjustments" on the elevation scale are quite coarse. Resp'y, Bob S. USN Distinguished Marksman No. O-067

Chris -
Layne at www.tngunparts.com has the 'tall' front sights available for the LG1911 for around $20, if you opt to go that direction. Read his statement concerning shipping times. Best, Ron P.S. - You also could ask Guisan if he has a rear sight 'fineadjuster' for your LG1911.

Remember, that lowest sight setting is in meters, not yards. 300 yards = 328 meters. So, if you are shooting at 200 yards, you are 128 yards
closer than the sight setting. If your rifle is shooting as you say, I'd hate to mess with it - it's probably dead-on for 300m Swiss matches.

Bayani I think you got it backwards. 300meters = 328 yards. To comvert meters to yards multiply meters by 1.093613. To convert yards to meters multiply yards
by .9144.

Yep 300 yards is 274 meters see...

Sorry . . . I don't know what I was thinking when I posted that. Maybe I wasn't thinking at all! Never mind.

The Swiss 1911 has about a 25 1/4" Sight Spacing, so about .007" thickness will give you 1 MOA. Wally |

Hi Wally,
I have done what you suggest ... I have had a set of shims made up with various thicknesses of steel shim stock folded to fit the underside of the elevation slide of Mausers ... and also the Swiss rifles. I have used these on the range when I'm just shooting for my own enjoyment, and it works very well. I'm not the decision authority for the CMP rules, but I would guess that these would be contrary to the spirit of "as issued". But then I thought that substiutution of the rifle lower band on the carbines was flagrantly contrary to the spirit of "as-issued" ... but it has been specifically allowed in the rules. The way things are going, if you stick around long enough, you'll be able to use Warner sights, glass bed a synthetic stock, and weight the rifle/carbine up to 15 lbs. Just my cynical, biased opinion. Resp'y, Bob S. USN Distinguished Marksman No. O-067 |

This is what I still think of as my service rifle:
