IMR 4350 with 168 grain boattail bullets

I have a big ole 8 pound jug of IMR4350 powder and a bunch of 168 grain nosler bullets. I want to load my 7.5x55 swiss.

I found this site: http://www.realguns.com/loads/7555swiss.htm with some loading data but honestly, 47.4 grains of 4350 just seems like a lot for a starting load (he lists 52.7 as max load so I took 10 percent off). Is that a hot load or is it reasonable for a starting load for IMR 4350?

Also does it matter all that much if I switch to Hornady 168 grain boat tail bullets?

(1) a little
(2) probably OK, you might want to start a grain or so lower. you are working up a load and looking for accuracy and any pressure signs? right?
(3)same as (2) and your not switching a bullet at a max powder charge? right?
use more than one data source. you might lookup a Sierra, IMR, or ?'s reloading web site. there are many best-o-luck

So are you saying that I should go a grain lower than the 47.4 grains which is 10 percent less than the 52.7 he lists as max charge?

Only if you want. What if your guns most accurate load is at say 46.8 grns or less? 47.4 isn't a bad starting point, but look at a few other data sources. I believe that most any other data's will show a little lower start and max.The K-31 has a strong action. In my old Sierra book, they list a max of 51w/your powder @2700fps. At realguns the various bullet vels all appear about 50 to 100fps faster than most other sources.I like chronographs and sometimes go a little faster looking for the load. Most times I go well below max. experiment, be safe, work up best-o-luck

Thank you for your advice.

I will make some with about 46.5 and some with 47.4 and compare them with my chrony. Will be interesting to see the results.

IMR 4350 with a 168 grain projectile.

Sierra Reloading Manual : Min. = 46.8 gr. / Max. = 51.0 gr.

Hornady Reloading Man. : Min. = 41.4 gr. / Max. = 51.4 gr.

The author of the chart at RealGuns DID post a warning about the substitution of components and stated : "These are maximum loads in my firearms and may easily be excessive in others".
Group size was appearently established by firing 3 shots at a distance of 50 yards with open sights.?

His Maximums seem too hot for my tastes. I prefer to err on the side of caution rather than to try and develop a brand new proof-load.
Faster is not always the most accurate way to go.

Be safe. Stick with proven sources for your reloading data.

Thank you for the info. I do not have a Sierra or Hornady manual that lists the 7.5x55 with IMR 4350. I only have an older Hornady manual. I also have the Lee and Speer but they don't list anything with IMR 4350 and 168 grain.
