Here's a nice example from the service book of a guy that was born in 1936.
The top picture shows the page with the obligatory gun inspections and the second shows at the left what he got issued and when and at the right what he turned in.
He entered the military in 1955/56 and he got a K31 with the serial 240819, in 1962 he had to trade that one in (right page) for a Stgw57 with serial 250121 (left page).
His military career ended in 1986, he turned in the Stgw (Waffe zurückgegeben) and got a K31 with serial 238033 privatized (P-stamp), kostenlos als Eigentum überlassen means handed over in his possession for free.
As we see this all happened at the Zeughaus (arsenal) of Zürich.
