Swiss Products St. Marie Clamp on Mount |
Lead | |
|
I sometimes run across a K31 with a clamp on mount that's supposed to be a St. Marie Swiss Products mount. I have the SM and one from Accumount. The
Accumount is 6" long with a threaded hole on top of the mount and no lip in front of the dovetail. The SM is 5 3/8" long with a lip in front of the
dovetail and no screw hole. There are some mounts being sold that are similar but are very poor quality. Is there any sure method (other than hard use) that
would identify an authentic SM mount? TIA

We've been talking about that lately. We'll probably end up with a SP stamped or engraved in the metal.
We know our own machining by the cuts and the mill direction, but most often we have to see the mount to know for sure. So far we've received a total of 7 mounts returned for replacement and not one was ours. The customer is usually not happy and doesn't like that they paid to ship it to us, but we've always paid their postage anyway. There's a definite reason why our mounts aren't longer than they are. If I can find the written explanation I'll post it. Thanks Latigo |

Swiss Products wrote:Do the mounts that have been returned to you look like yours? In the photo of one I'm looking at now the mount looks the same except that it is purplish in color like some anodized aluminum quad rails I've seen. It is 5 3/8" and has a lip at one end of the dovetail. Thanks for any help you can give. |

Some of them are pretty good copies, but usually the finish and the machining underneath aren't the same. Hard to tell without seeing it. Some of them are
not as hard as ours, but there are so many now that it gets confusing. Some of them even use steel screws and aluminum clamping wedges. If I had it in my hand
I could tell in two seconds.
Sorry I can't be of more help. Latigo |

Thanks Latigo. What about the purplish color? The photographs look identical to the one I have on one of my rifles.

Ours are dead black. Maybe the photo isn't quite true in color?
I just cycled through all of our photos and none of them look purplish in color at all. Latigo |

Just sent you a PM a bit ago with a pic asking if this was one of your mounts.
TIA. |

Sorry. I was looking in email.
It looks like one, but its hard to tell. A closeup of the underside tells me more. Latigo |

As of today all production Swiss Products mounts, steel or aluminum and all Diopters will have our SP engraved in the metal before anodizing and bluing.

Right, SM engraved would attract a different public, best is to engrave the full name or url to the website on top as people may wonder what SP stands for....

Swiss Products wrote:Thanks again. I passed up buying the rifle. It would have been a decent price if I could have been sure the mount was SP. |

Swiss Products wrote: Your Lordship is one bright penny, for sure, although I agree with Guisan-san that a little more (like, the SP logo, perhaps?) would do better to make the brand more self-evident. |

Why not create an engraveable trademark and use it!
I got my two via Graf's and prefer to purchase my accessories from a "reputable" dealer, even if it does cost more that way.
