I recently got an RCBS Rock Chucker kit from my wife for my B-day. I'm mainly reloading 7.5x55, 6.8SPC, and 5.56. I have some GP11 brass that I would like to reuse. Is there a practical way to convert the cases to use comercial primers? What tools are needed? If not, how do I reload with a military primer? Thanks!

Posts: 1513 (01/15/08 13:23:01) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	You can reload GP11 brass with commercial primers - as long as they are Berdan primers of the correct size and type. Unfortunately, these primers are currently almost impossible to obtain at reasonable cost in the US. There is no easy or practical way to convert GP11 cases from .217" Berdan primers to US standard .210" Boxer primers, since the primer pocket is rather different. It's been done, but entails a lot of skill and detailed work. A cost-effective approach is to obtain Boxer-type cases (7.5x55 or .284 Winchester) and prime them with readily-obtainable Boxer primers.

As Parashooter has pointed out, the issue is not commercial versus military but Berdan versus Boxer priming systems. One can buy the equivalent of military primers in that primers that have a harder primer cup are available for use in arms that may have a slam fire problem. Not needed in 7.5x55mm straight pull actions. There was someone proposing making primer pocket inserts of some kind and drilling out a new flashhole on surplusrifleforum.com today, he got huffy at the responses he got. Its a rather silly thing to try to do in my opinion given the relatively low cost of Boxer primed brass from Prvi Partisan etc. My time is too valuable, I don't like the result of drilling out a Berdan primed case and having extra loose bits of metal floating around the butt end of a case concerns me.

Works like a champ, even after seven reloads in one case with a pretty stiff load! Full details in a new topic after I take some pictures.
