Help with Stock Band Spring Removal.

I am going to restore the beech stock on my new K31, and I am having a heck of a time getting the rear band spring off. Is there a trick to removing the slotted nut? Thanks.

I posted this on surplusrifleforum, hoping maybe some of you have comments:

I got my 1889 yesterday, just need a minor bore cleaning, and a little dressing of the wood under the bolt latch so it would come out easily. Other than that it was in great shape(from Simpsons). Based on the serial number it was made in 1892, however when I took the butt-plate off it seemed to have an 1895 date on the stock, maybe I'm reading it wrong, or it was replaced...

Hello everyone, since i am new and have a lot of questions i would post them in the same thread.

I have got in my collection a original M1889 Schmidt Rubin riffle, It is in a pretty pore condition but i am going to restore it.

The Rubber (i think it is) on the pull lever, is nearly all gone, but it can still be used, i was thinking about turning some new ones in aluminum.

I also need to make some new screws because some is missing, every thing that is blued will...
