Got another Vetterli

Found a nice M78/81 Vetterli at Cabelas in Wheeling, WV.

They had 399.00$ on it, I offered 325.00$, and we settled at 350.00$.

She has a bore that cleaned up to like new, and a spare firing pin under the buttplate.

The spare firing pin wasn't wrapped in foil, so I oiled it and wrapped it up in a little bit of aluminum foil.

She also has a cleaning rod.

I'm looking to buy my first Vetterli and am wondering what parts I should be looking at to determine if the rifle is fully matching. So far, I know about the left side of the receiver & barrel, and the bolt body...are there more that I should be aware of both externally and internally.

Vetterli 69/71 front sight

Is the Vetterli 69/71 front sight simply lead soldered onto the top of the barrel? I have examined it in the past under magnification and the small base and blade appear to be one piece. Mine is covered in patina. I thought I saw a pin in the base once, but increased magnification showed that was probably not the case..........Mike

"Tweaking" M-78/81 extractor

Having read Parashooter's solution to an extractor not grabbing brass I'd like to know if it's possible to increase tension by slightly bending without breaking the extractor body itself? I'm using reformed Graf 8MM Lebel cases so the rims should be plenty large.

My extractor "hangs", i.e. doesn't have enough downward pressure to return to the bottom of the mortise. I can push it down with finger pressure as I draw the bolt rearward and it will...

Unique bolt conversion

Barrel condition

Hey all,

Again another question. I've been able to obtain a M71 with good wood and overall apparence is good. Only.......the barrel is really rusty at the last 4" of the barrel. Also the first 2" right behind the chamber is really rusty.
The lands/groves are still visable and look sharp, but rusty. I gave it a good cleaning, with a light polishing compound, and they did clean up well but the pitting is still visible.....Does pitting affect my accuracy very much?...

M71 M81 bolt switch

Hey All,

Does somebody know if it's possible to switch bolts from a M81 into a M71? They do fit and close, but is it safe to shoot? I'm considering this because the bolt from the M71 isn't in such a good shape and isn't converted to centerfire, and the M81 has already been converted.

Neck sizing?

WTB a M81 RF pin

Hi all,

I've broken my badly modified RF pin on my M81 rifle. The modification was probably done by a rifle butcher....not me!
Anyway, I desperately need a RF pin for my M81. I can make alternatives but I also want/need an original one.

Who can help me out? Were can I find spare parts? If somebody has one to spare, I'm happy to pay for it.

Shooting a Vetterli Stutzer

Got a chance to shoot a Vetterli Stutzer a couple weeks ago courtesy of wkato...

He found a nice rifle locally here in rifle that was in great shape, with a matching M81 pattern sawback bayo... All except the bore which looked a little sewer pipish, even after a good scrub...

Well nothing better than some live ammo for a better scrub and now the bore is starting to shine up very nicely

Has anyone ever heard of a M81 Vetterli converted to centerfire shotgun? There is one in an auction with several bids so I won't post a link. It has brass shell cases, decapper, powder measure, wadcutter and handpress.

I promised some weeks ago to post a target whenever I finally got to shoot my Vetterli. Well, today was that day and I wasn't dissappointed. I used 348W brass (formed in the Lee 41swiss die) and 300gn. 422 dia. tapered paper patch bullets from Buffalo Arms Co. (Montana Swaging). Brass was trimmed to 42mm and OAL was mostly 2.200 in. Hi All!

Were there any original Vetterli rifles fitted with optics?
I'm looking for a good picture of a scope and mount that may have been used on a Vetterli.
I'm building a 3D Digital model of the Vetterli and had a request for a sniper vs, but i want to be 100% accurate before i even start.

I'd assume any sharpshooter rifle would have double set triggers as well??

New member here. I just got a vetterli at an auction and I've been trying to figure out exactly what it is. It has the sliding door over the magazine on the right side of the reciever and the magazine load lock on the left side of the reciever which would seem to make it a model 1869.
